The
story

Haya Al Badarneh holding the BAFTA mask.
BAFTA Television Awards

Jordanian, born in the UAE and now permanently based in Britain, Haya grew up moving between cultures, languages and different ways of seeing the world. That experience has shaped much of the journalist she became and the stories she is drawn to.

Her career started in 2010, behind a radio microphone. She went on to work as a journalist and TV reporter, before moving behind the camera into live television production and later executive production. After moving to London, she shifted towards long-form documentaries and investigations, working today as a film producer and investigative journalist.

Over the past 16 years, her work has taken her across the Middle East, Europe and the United States. She is particularly drawn to stories that require time, trust and persistence: finding people who are difficult to reach, building relationships, digging through evidence and following connections across countries.

Her journalism has received numerous international awards and nominations, including recognition from BAFTA, the Grierson Awards, the AIB Awards, One World Media, the Amnesty Media Awards, Prix Europa and PriMed. Her work includes the BAFTA-winning Life and Death in Gaza, as well as investigations including Syria’s Stolen Children, Gaza Diaries and Syria Captagon.

Working in both Arabic and English, Haya combines investigative journalism and film production with open-source research and emerging AI tools, constantly exploring new ways to find and tell stories.

At the heart of her work, though, are people. She believes the best journalism comes from getting close enough to understand someone’s world, listening before making assumptions, and asking the question that might otherwise have been missed.
